Trekking Cabins
Amber Road Trekking Cabin Competition, Bee Breeders
[Latvia E-9 Trail]
In Collaboration with D. Li | Fall 2017
These cabins, strategically scattered along the 530 kilometers of the Amber Road Trek, will act as a beacon of comfort and utility to hikers as they explore the rugged natural beauty of the Baltic coast. The robust concrete structures are linked to the land on which they stand with locally sourced timber elements. The thermal mass of the concrete walls keeps the cabin efficiently heated in winter, while in summer, the space is kept cool with operable windows that provide views close to the ground, dissolving the barrier between user and the environment they are exploring. The amenity elements we provide are spread across a network of cabins allows for trekkers to have full access to services as needed, while minimizing the cost of outfitting any one individual cabin. This ensures that trekkers will have access to necessary services within a day’s hike.
