400 South Salina Streets | Syracuse, NY

Spring 2018 - In Collaboration with A. Campion

Keeping with the context of the various stages the city of Syracuse has gone through, we aim to design a project that both fits within the context while being energy efficient in construction and use. The site being the old Sibley's Department store greatly influenced our facade design down to the little details of the rainscreen panels. Overall, our moves were simple, but created wonderful spaces.

In homage to the 1960’s style, the spirit of advertisements and posters from that time was one of the drivers for the building’s design. Sibley’s Department store was built in 1969 and became a big part of downtown Syracuse. Unfortunately, in the early 1980’s, it was vacated and half of the site was re-purposed and re-clad for general office space. Focusing on cultural performance in the design process, aspects of the previous facade design of Sibley’s were used, while newer materials that will much improve the current envelope were added to the design. As an homage to both Sibley’s and the historical architecture in Armory Square and Syracuse, the proposal aims fit into the contexts of the site’s surroundings. It works in conjunction with the idea of new tenants bringing vibrancy to downtown Syracuse, in the same way Sibley’s did in the 60’s. Specifically, the street facing facades use reconstituted stone panels from an existing manufacturer, while on the interior courtyard conditions glass facades were designed.
